Virtual Get-together via Videoconferencing

Topic: A Model for Effective Technology Integration

Tuesday, May 29, 2001
12 noon – 1:00 p.m.
Presenter: Ms. Tracy Smith, Assistant Director of Technology Services, Colonial Intermediate Unit 20

Although many teachers now have access to computers, software, and even the Internet, some still have not realized the potential of using these tools with their students. Lack of planning time, training, or a general awareness of its potential are but a few of the reasons some teachers have yet to integrate the use of technology into their teaching.

To encourage educators to make the most of the technology available to them, Colonial Intermediate Unit 20, in collaboration with its member districts, collated lesson plans, student projects, and training resources to assist teachers in learning and using technology effectively with their students. In addition to being K-12, cross-curricular, and project-oriented, the lesson plans are standards-based and provide techniques for differentiated instruction. Because the lessons primarily incorporate Microsoft Office software, tutorials for the Microsoft Office applications have also been included, as well as student projects from both local and international competitions.

The lesson plans are housed on a CD-ROM that has a Macromedia Flash interface to walk the user step-by-step through selecting and accessing materials. During the virtual get-together we will discuss how the CD-ROM is being used, how training is being addressed, and other projects that IU 20 is working on to help districts with one of their toughest challenges: integrating technology into the curriculum.
