Topic: Student Directed IT Support Services: The Juniata Model
Wednesday, February 14, 2001
3:00 – 4:30 p.m.
Presenters: Dr. Anthony Bichel, Jacob Dickerson, Jason Fournier, Tim McMichael, Jason Michael and Joel Pheasant - Juniata College
Small and medium sized colleges and universities have traditionally had a particularly difficult time recruiting and retaining professional
instructional technology (IT) staff members. Most schools in this genre are presently operating with fewer FTE IT staff than is generally
recommended or necessary. For many institutions, part-time student technology assistants (STA) have been the only feasible means of relief,
but many of these same institutions still find it difficult to make effective use of their STA's and continue to struggle with the growing
needs of their users. Juniata College is no exception.
The "Juniata Model" builds on the idea that students are a welcome and necessary component to any campus technology services program and
expands it by fully incorporating the students into the institutional management structure. Students working under the Teaching Learning
and Technology (TLT) umbrella of services (graphic arts, digital video production, AV services, computer labs, theatre production, training,
instructional design and the Web) participate as full members of the organizational community.
Juniata's TLT program is staffed by 5 FTE and 70 students, 8 of which serve as managers of their respective divisions.

- Anthony is the Director of Teaching Learning Technologies at Juniata College. He also teaches in the Political Science and Information
Technology departments.
