Topic: Organization Meeting for NSF Grant Proposal

Wednesday, January 30, 2002
3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Presenter: Galen Godbey, CAPE Staff

Galen Godbey, CAPE's Executive Director, invites all CAPE member institutions to consider joining in the NSF Grant Proposal: A Collaborative Approach to Exploring, Applying, and Disseminating Integrated Product Development (IPD) Team Learning Strategies Across Disciplines, Institutions, Institutional Sectors, and Nations

This initial videoconferenced meeting will be to organize, and divide labor for the preparation of this proposal. The grant proposal is described in rough, initial summary below. The proposal due date is February 6. You can obtain grant guidelines at www.nsf.gov/pubs/2001/nsf01149/nsf01149.pdf. Letters of support from senior institution officers (President, Superintendent, etc.) must be received by CAPE staff by February 4.

Integrated Product (Project) Development is a multi- and inter-disciplinary, team-based approach to learning which focuses upon the development of an actual product or a curricular project. When students from multiple institutions use technology to facilitate their teamwork - - especially when those students represent different cultures and /or countries - - a complex, but exceptionally exciting and relevant learning environment can be created. Indeed, adding technology, inter-institutional collaboration, and international dimensions to IPD creates a learning environment which directly correlates with the emerging globalized environments in which more and more organizations operate. You can learn more about the IPD model from the following website: www2.lehigh.edu/page.asp?page=ibe#wengmajor.

We will seek approximately $500K. CAPE would administer the grant, which would cover a two-year period. Lehigh University is a national leader in IPD, and Professor John Ochs would provide project leadership. Approximately $200,000 would be devoted to developing "the IPD game," which would have several versions, including a computer-based simulation, a board game, and a simulation with teachers who take on consultant roles and students who have to develop the product. Approximately $150K - $200Kwould be devoted to supporting five to seven faculty teams at CAPE member colleges and/or school districts, plus 3 foreign teams (one each from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands) in their initial learning about and classroom application of the IPD teaching approach. The balance of funds would support a half-time project director and general overhead.
